The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, in partnership with Safe Kids Erie County and Shriners Children’s Erie, will host a free children’s bicycle rodeo on Saturday, May 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the parking lot of Shriners Children’s Erie on West 8th Street.

The rodeo is open to children of all ages and is designed to promote safe riding habits ahead of the summer season. Participants will navigate an obstacle course that teaches skills such as balance, turning, and proper hand signaling.

Organizers say children should bring their own bicycle and helmet and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Helmet fittings and inspections will be available, along with a limited number of free helmets.

Bicycle inspections and minor repairs will also be offered on site, and a small number of bikes will be available for those who do not have one.

Each child who participates will be entered into a drawing to win a new bicycle. A light meal will also be provided during the event.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled.

Pre-registration is encouraged through PennDOT’s District 1 website.
