Union City Battles Back After Slow Start, Falls to Sharpsville 42-19

UNION CITY – Union City battled back after falling behind early, but Sharpsville pulled away for a 42-19 victory Saturday night at Bears Stadium.

Sharpsville scored on its first possession and built a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Geno Currie accounted for three of the Blue Devils’ first-half touchdowns, while Tre’Marr Ham-McCullough added a rushing touchdown to make it 28-0 early in the second quarter.

Union City answered with its first touchdown late in the second quarter. Garrett Miller capped a long drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, with Chase Whitmeyer adding the extra point to cut the deficit to 28-7.

Sharpsville added another touchdown before halftime to take a 35-7 lead into the break.

The Bears came out with a strong response in the third quarter.

Union City put together a lengthy opening drive, with Jayden Betcher contributing a long quarterback run and Danny Smith providing several key runs. Smith eventually scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 35-13.

Sharpsville answered with another touchdown from Currie, but Union City continued to fight back.

Later in the third quarter, Betcher connected with Torun Dennis for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Bears attempted a two-point conversion but were stopped, making the score 42-19.

Union City’s defense also produced several key stands, including a fourth-down stop near midfield late in the third quarter. Hunter Michael and Hunter Price were among the Bears making important defensive plays throughout the game.

The Bears continued to battle in the fourth quarter, although Sharpsville held on for the 42-19 win.

Individual stats were not provided by press time.

Union City will return to action Friday, Oct. 2, at Cambridge Springs. Cambridge Springs enters the matchup unbeaten at 5-0.
