WOODCOCK TOWNSHIP — A fire Friday afternoon destroyed the clubhouse at The Country Club of Meadville, sending smoke into the sky as firefighters from throughout Crawford County and the surrounding area worked for more than three hours to battle the blaze, according to a Meadville Tribune report.
About 15 to 20 people were inside the clubhouse when smoke was discovered around 3:30 p.m. Everyone was evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
The fire initially appeared to be relatively small, with smoke discovered near the attic area. Flames eventually broke through the roof, and the fire spread through the clubhouse, including the locker rooms, lounge and dining room.
Firefighters used multiple aerial trucks, master-stream water cannons and ground hoses to attack the fire. Portable water tanks were also established as crews prepared for an extended operation.
Fire departments responding included West Mead 1, West Mead 2, Meadville Central, East Mead, Cambridge Springs, Conneaut Lake, Randolph Township, Vernon Central, Townville, Cochranton, Venango, Blooming Valley, Saegertown, Hayfield, Utica and Edinboro. The Crawford County Scuba Team and Meadville Area Ambulance Service also responded.
Despite the loss of the clubhouse, the golf course itself was not damaged. The clubhouse’s future was already being considered Friday evening, with plans for the insured property to eventually be rebuilt.
