Several community cleanup, recycling, and beautification events are scheduled throughout the region in the coming weeks as local organizations and municipalities encourage residents to help prepare neighborhoods and public spaces for summer.
The first event on the calendar is the seventh annual cleanup day sponsored by the Union City Police Department on Friday, May 15. The cleanup will run from 8 a.m. to noon at the Little League Fields at the north end of First Avenue in Union City.
According to Police Chief David Pernice, the event began as a community litter cleanup initiative and has since expanded to include a variety of spring cleanup and preparation projects in partnership with local groups. Volunteers will assist with litter pickup and other projects connected to preparing the fields and surrounding areas for the upcoming summer season. Water will be provided for volunteers. In the event of rain, the cleanup will be postponed until May 22.
On Saturday, May 30, Waterford Township will host a cleanup day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the township building. Residents may drop off metals, furniture, yard debris, and general junk and rubbish free of charge. Certain items, including tires, appliances, and electronics, will be accepted for a fee. Hazardous waste, vehicles, propane tanks, paint cans, and household trash will not be accepted.
Several events are also planned for Saturday, June 6.
Union City Borough will hold a tire recycling event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the borough garage on Willow Street. The event is free for borough residents with proof of residency and is limited to five tires per address. Tires must have rims removed.
Also on June 6, Bloomfield Township and the Canadohta Lake community will conduct a community cleanup day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bloomfield Township Building. Organizers say the event will accept a variety of cleanup materials but will not accept paint, electronics, tires, dehumidifiers, or items containing freon.
Later in the month, residents of Wayne and Concord townships, along with the City of Corry, will have access to a free tire recycling event on Saturday, June 27, at the Elgin-Beaverdam Fire Hall. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is limited to 10 tires per address with proof of residency required. Tractor tires will be accepted from noon to 1 p.m. No rims will be permitted.
