According to police, the incident was reported April 8 in Waterford Township. Investigators say unknown individuals posed as representatives of the Erie Otters and contacted a victim claiming the organization was seeking vendors for the 2026–2027 season.

During the scheme, the suspects attempted to collect a deposit to secure a vendor spot.

Police say the victim, a 36-year-old woman from Erie, recognized the situation as a scam and did not send any money. No financial loss was reported.

Troopers say the incident is being investigated as theft by deception and identity theft. Authorities are advising the public to be cautious of unsolicited business offers and to verify the legitimacy of any requests for payment before providing money or personal information.
