With a significant winter storm expected to impact Pennsylvania and much of the Northeast, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is urging residents to prepare for possible power outages and hazardous conditions.
The storm is forecast to bring heavy snow, ice, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures. The PUC advises residents to plan ahead by charging essential devices, stocking flashlights, batteries, food, water, and medications, and staying informed through weather forecasts and utility updates.
Residents are reminded to report power outages directly to their electric utility and to stay well clear of downed power lines, which should always be treated as energized. Officials stress that 9-1-1 should be reserved for life-threatening emergencies, not routine outage reports.
During outages, the PUC recommends using flashlights instead of candles, unplugging sensitive electronics, and operating generators outdoors only to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Checking on elderly neighbors or those with special needs is also encouraged.
Utility companies across the state are activating winter storm response plans, including pre-positioning crews and coordinating with emergency management agencies. The PUC says it will closely monitor restoration efforts throughout the storm.
Additional winter safety information is available through the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.
