ERIE — Erie County will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, while also celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Perry Monument at Presque Isle State Park.
The 9/11 ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m. at the Erie Maritime Museum, in the rear of the facility near the U.S. Brig Niagara. The program will include reflections from individuals who were at the World Trade Center on the morning of the attacks. Music will be provided by the Erie Philharmonic.
Local fire, law enforcement and emergency personnel will be present as the community honors those affected by the attacks. The ceremony is free and open to the public, with shuttle service available.
The county will also commemorate the centennial of the Perry Monument Thursday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. at Crystal Point at the entrance to Misery Bay in Presque Isle State Park.
The monument was dedicated Sept. 10, 1926, and honors sailors who wintered near Misery Bay during 1813-14 while supporting the War of 1812 naval fleet, as well as Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory in the Battle of Lake Erie.
The centennial ceremony will include historical reflections on Perry, Misery Bay and the monument’s significance, along with live music from the Erie Philharmonic and a bagpipe tribute. Remarks are also scheduled from Rear Admiral Sam Cox. A military flyover is planned, pending confirmation.
The Perry Monument ceremony is free and open to the public. Parking is recommended at Beach 11, where continuous shuttle service will transport attendees to and from the monument.
The two ceremonies highlight different chapters of Erie County history — the 9/11 memorial honoring those affected by a defining event of the modern era and the Perry Monument’s centennial marking the region’s connection to the War of 1812.
