SPARTA TOWNSHIP — A Spartansburg man remains jailed on $250,000 monetary bail after being charged in connection with the alleged shooting at a pickup truck occupied by two teenagers in Sparta Township, according to Crawford County court records.
Earl Arvray Rorer III, 53, was charged following an incident that investigators said occurred at about 10:40 p.m. July 8 in the 23600 block of Byler Road, about three miles west of Spartansburg. Police allege Rorer fired three rifle rounds at a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 occupied by a 17-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger. The rounds struck near the driver’s side fuel tank, the edge of the truck bed and the tailgate.
According to police, the driver told investigators she saw a green laser in the roadway before hearing several gunshots.
Rorer told troopers he believed there were two men in the bed of the truck and thought they had firearms. He allegedly told police he fired into the ground near the vehicle because he believed a gun was pointed at him.
Along with two counts of attempted homicide, Crawford County court records show he is charged six felony assault-related charges, two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, two counts of simple assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, two summary counts of harassment and one count of criminal mischief.
Rorer was arraigned July 9 before Magisterial District Judge Benjamin Leach, who set bail at $250,000 monetary. He remains confined in the Crawford County Prison after being unable to post bail.
The preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for July 16, was continued to July 21 and has since been rescheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, before Judge Leach, according to court records.
