According to the Erie Station of the Pennsylvania State Police, troopers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving DUI patrols at various locations throughout Erie County during the holiday period. The enforcement effort is intended to identify and remove impaired drivers from area roadways.

State police said alcohol- and drug-impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of preventable traffic deaths each year. Motorists planning to consume alcohol are encouraged to arrange for a designated sober driver before heading out.

Troopers also cautioned that certain prescription medications, as well as illegal drugs, can impair a driver’s ability to safely operate a vehicle.

The increased enforcement initiative is intended to reduce impaired driving crashes and improve highway safety during one of the year’s busiest travel weekends. State police are urging motorists to make responsible choices and help keep roadways safe throughout the Independence Day holiday.
