Union City School Board Approves Fall Coaches, Personnel Changes and District Agreements

UNION CITY — The Union City Area School Board took action on a wide range of personnel, athletic, financial and academic matters during its June 11 meeting, including approving coaching staffs for the upcoming fall sports season and filling several district positions. Based on information provided in the meeting reports, the board approved the following actions.
Leading the board’s actions was the approval of paid and volunteer coaches for the 2026-27 fall athletic season.

For junior high girls basketball, Kristen Ahl was approved as ninth-grade coach and Jennifer Drayer as seventh- and eighth-grade coach.

The cross country program will be led by Jeannette Boyd as head coach and Peter Boyd as assistant coach. Blair Blakeslee will serve as junior high coach, while Sharon Reagle and Cindy Struble were approved as volunteers.

The football program will again be headed by Michael Wydro. Shawn Thompson was approved as junior high head coach, with Scott Thompson and Steve Thompson serving as junior high assistants. James Sheldon will serve as assistant varsity coach, joined by Jacques “JT” Taylor and J. Knablein as assistant varsity coaches. Volunteers approved for football include Jacob Betcher, Jeffrey Holes and Macoy Keener. Peyton Jackson was approved as cheerleading adviser.

For golf, Kimberly DeSimone was approved as girls head coach and Steve Yovich as boys head coach. Nathan DeSimone, Joshua James and Brett Lineman were approved as volunteers for the boys program, while Tara Lineman and Megan Murphy will volunteer with the girls team.

The girls volleyball coaching staff will consist of Morgan Kula as head coach and Christopher Zielinski as assistant coach. Brenna Houpt and Ashley Wurster were approved as volunteers.

In other co-curricular business, the board appointed Joshua Mumau as STEM adviser and Janel Zahner as 12th grade level adviser. Stephanie Lassiter and Daniel McNulty were added to the Marching Band Boosters volunteer list for the remainder of the current school year. The board also accepted the resignations of Amanda Holmes as senior class adviser and Amorette Ross as spelling bee and geography bee coordinator.

Personnel actions included accepting the resignation of Nicklaus Bryant from his position as a life skills classroom paraprofessional and accepting Amanda Holmes’ resignation as high school life skills support teacher. Olivia Wojcicehowski was approved to fill the life skills support teacher position beginning with the 2026-27 school year. The board also approved Cassandra Craig and Zachary Leyda as Monark Student Transportation Corporation bus drivers for the district, pending completion of employment requirements. An addendum regarding unused vacation days for administrators covered under Act 93 agreements was also approved.

Financial matters included approval of the district’s Fund 51 food service budget for 2026-27, renewal of insurance coverage through Wright’s Specialty Insurance, and an agreement with Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Center for extended school year education services at Elizabeth Lee Black School. Board members also approved updated virtual academy service options for the upcoming school year.

Academic actions included revisions to the 2026-27 Union City Area High School Course Description Guide to reflect updates involving Career and Technical Education requirements and dual enrollment opportunities. The board also approved the Erie County Special Education Transition Program Operating Agreement, a memorandum of understanding with the Union City Area Education Association related to Warren County School District Virtual Academy services, and the Warren County School District Open Campus Agreement. In addition, directors reviewed district policies addressing bullying and cyberbullying, as well as school security personnel.
