Union City Area Elementary School’s PTO surprised Principal Dr. Melissa Tomcho with a special retirement gift June 3, unveiling a handcrafted bench dedicated in recognition of her decades of service to the Union City Area School District.

The bench, created by Union City artist Blain Blakeslee, now sits outside the front entrance of the elementary school. Tomcho, who has served as elementary principal since 2021, is retiring at the end of June after more than 30 years with the district in a variety of roles.

PTO President Lisa Kolaja said the carvings featured on the bench reflect the lasting impact Tomcho has had on students, families and staff.

“The bear represents Dr. Tomcho’s fierce protection and unwavering care,” Kolaja said. “The owl stands as a symbol of the wisdom instilled upon the countless students she guided, while the raccoon reminds us that education should still hold joy, curiosity and laughter.”

The bench also features books, an apple and trees woven into the design. Kolaja noted that the apple pays tribute not only to Tomcho’s early years as a social studies teacher, but also to her efforts in helping establish the district’s backpack program to ensure students had food over weekends.

“She understood something powerful: before children can focus on education, they first need their basic needs met,” Kolaja said.

Tomcho said she was deeply touched by the recognition.

“I am incredibly honored and touched by the beautifully carved bench crafted by Blain Blakeslee that was dedicated to me by our Union City PTO,” Tomcho said. “It is more than just a bench; it is a lasting symbol of the relationships, memories and support we have shared throughout the years.”

Kolaja said the tribute reflects the influence Tomcho’s leadership will continue to have on future generations.

“Dr. Tomcho’s career with UCASD concludes this month, but the love, compassion, leadership and opportunities she planted throughout more than three decades of service will continue branching outward,” she said.

Tomcho’s retirement marks the end of a career that has impacted generations of Union City students and families.
