The Union City track and field team turned in one of its most productive performances of the season on April 21, traveling to North East for a dual meet featuring both North East and Iroquois. Despite falling in both team matchups, the Bears delivered a standout day highlighted by 40 personal records and multiple district-qualifying marks.
On the boys side, Union City dropped decisions to North East (104.5-44.5) and Iroquois (96-53), while the girls fell 101-39 to North East and 96-53 to Iroquois. However, the scoreboard only told part of the story, as Union City athletes posted significant individual breakthroughs across nearly every event group.
The boys 4×800 relay of Josh Mitcham, Josiah Shrout, Luke Himrod, and Zachary Myer delivered one of the meet’s top highlights, winning in a district-qualifying time of 9:17.74. Mitcham also punched his ticket to districts in the 800, tying for first with a personal-best 2:04.01, and added a win in the 1600 (4:44.78). Myer contributed a strong distance double with second in the 1600 (5:06.30) and second in the 3200 (11:30.27), while Jayden Leonard added a third-place finish in the 3200 (14:29.44).
Union City’s sprint and hurdle group also produced key scoring. Tyler Messina posted a major breakout in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing second in 44.50—a mark that also qualified him for districts. Joe Green captured the 400-meter win (56.21), while Trysten Kibbe added a second-place finish in the 200 (24.32 in the Iroquois results) and third in the 400 (reported 100.4 in North East scoring split listings). Josiah Shrout added a third in the 300 hurdles (49.99).
In the field events, Jackson Kibbe delivered one of the most dominant individual performances of the meet. He placed first in the triple jump (40-11), finished second in the high jump (5-11), and added a second-place finish in the javelin (146-4 against North East; 130-0 vs. Iroquois reporting varies by scoring sheet but both mark consistent top-flight results). Lucas Myer was a major contributor in the pole vault, finishing first at 12-0, with Zakkary Tomcho placing third at 8-0. Cork Greer added a second-place finish in the discus (86-7 vs. Iroquois).
The girls team also produced a strong set of individual results despite the team losses, with several athletes collecting wins across multiple events.
KayLee Creamer was one of the top performers of the day, winning both hurdle events against Iroquois—the 100 hurdles (16.34) and 300 hurdles (51.54)—and adding a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles against North East. She also led Union City’s long jump group with a win at 15-8.
Kaliyah Stine continued her strong season with wins in the triple jump (28-9) and second-place finishes in the long jump (14-8) and 400 (1:17.59).
