National Work Zone Awareness Week will be observed April 20 through April 24, focusing on roadway safety and encouraging drivers to use caution in areas where construction or maintenance work is underway. This year’s theme is “Safe Actions Save Lives.”
Transportation officials are reminding motorists to follow posted work zone speed limits, stay alert, and pay close attention to signs and flaggers. Drivers are also encouraged to maintain safe following distances, avoid distractions, and use flashers if traveling at reduced speeds.
State law requires headlights to be on when traveling through all posted work zones. Officials note that daytime running lights do not meet the requirement, as full headlights also activate rear taillights for added visibility.
Drivers should also be aware that some interstate work zones with higher-cost projects include speed-monitoring systems designed to alert motorists to their speed before entering construction areas.
