Nearly 30 high school students put their driving skills to the test during the 18th annual Teen Driver Safety Competition held in Erie County.
The event, organized by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Northwest Chapter of the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, and several community safety partners, challenged students through a series of driving and safety exercises.
Participants competed in a slow-drive obstacle course at Grace Church in McKean, completed a pre-trip vehicle inspection, and took written tests designed to evaluate overall driving knowledge and ability.
Nicholas Hodas of Fort LeBoeuf High School earned first place and a $1,000 prize. John Sank of North East High School finished second, receiving $500, while Drake Limnick, also of Fort LeBoeuf, placed third and earned $300.
In team competition, John Sank and Willie Shunk of North East High School posted the highest combined score, earning $500 for their student council. Their names will also be added to the county’s traveling trophy, which will be displayed at the school for the next year.
Local law enforcement officers, professional truck drivers and other driving experts administered the competition.
Cash prizes were donated by local Allstate representative Matt Barczyk and Great Lakes Insurance Services Group.
Additional partners supporting the event included several regional businesses and transportation organizations.
