A $6.9 million project to replace a bridge carrying U.S. Route 6 over French Creek in Woodcock Township, Pennsylvania and Hayfield Township, Pennsylvania is scheduled to begin the week of March 23.

The bridge is located between Morris Road and Black Road, about two miles southwest of Saegertown, Pennsylvania.

The project will remove and replace the existing metal truss bridge, including its pier, with a new concrete structure. Additional work will include milling and paving the roadway on both sides of the bridge, along with updated pavement markings, guide rail and drainage improvements.

Major construction is expected to begin April 6, weather permitting, and the project is scheduled for completion in December.

A detour will be required during construction. Traffic will be routed using Interstate 79 and Pennsylvania Route 198. The detour is expected to be in place from April 6 through Oct. 23.

Because Route 6 is also a designated bicycle route, a separate detour for cyclists will use Route 198, Park Avenue Extension and East Cole Road.

The current truss bridge was built in 1937 and is rated in poor condition. About 7,100 vehicles cross the bridge each day on average.

The contractor for the project is Palo Construction. The contract totals $6,933,024 and is being funded entirely with state funds.

The project is the second bridge replacement along this stretch of Route 6. A truss bridge located just south of Saegertown was replaced in 2025.
