The annual Charter Day celebration commemorates March of 1681, when England’s King Charles II granted a land charter to William Penn, establishing what would become the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Today, the observance is coordinated by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, with many state historic sites offering free admission and family-friendly activities.

One local opportunity to take part in the celebration will be at the Drake Well Museum and Park in Titusville, Pennsylvania.

The museum will offer free admission on Sunday, March 8 as part of the statewide Charter Day observance. Visitors can tour the historic oil heritage site throughout the day, and complimentary birthday cupcakes will be available while supplies last.

Charter Day activities are held each year at numerous museums and historic locations around Pennsylvania, giving residents an opportunity to explore the state’s history while celebrating the anniversary of its founding.
