WEST MIDDLESEX – Union City battled West Middlesex through several competitive stretches Thursday but fell to the Big Reds in three sets, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-23.
Union City got off to a strong start in the opening set, building a 6-0 lead before West Middlesex began to chip away. The Bears continued to battle and held a 16-15 advantage before the Big Reds regained control. West Middlesex eventually pulled ahead 21-18 and closed out the set 25-20.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Union City came out quickly and led 6-1 before extending the advantage to 11-3. West Middlesex answered with a long run, tying the set at 11-11 and then taking a 13-11 lead. The Big Reds maintained the momentum from there and won 25-16.
Union City again established an early lead in the third set, going ahead 8-4. West Middlesex rallied to tie the set at 9-9 and took an 11-9 lead, but the Bears continued to fight.
The teams traded the lead throughout the middle portion of the set. Union City tied the score at 15-15 and later held leads of 17-16, 20-19 and 21-20. West Middlesex answered with a three-point run to take a 23-21 advantage.
Union City pulled within one at 24-23 on a kill by Kimberly Zielinski, but West Middlesex scored the final point to take the set 25-23 and complete the sweep.
Zielinski finished with six kills and four assists for Union City. Danica Williamson recorded five kills and 15 digs, while Josephine McQueen contributed four assists and five digs. Alivia Zielinski had 10 digs, and Leeah Williamson added five digs.
The loss dropped Union City to 1-7 on the season. The Bears will return to action Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Iroquois.
