Mercer Sweeps Union City in Region 2 Volleyball

The Union City girls volleyball team dropped a 3-0 Region 2 decision to Mercer on Friday, with the Mustangs taking the match 25-9, 25-16 and 25-11.

Mercer came out quickly in the opening set, building an early 8-0 advantage and extending the lead to 12-0 before Union City settled into the match. The Bears battled back late with a three-point run, but Mercer closed out the set, 25-9.

Union City was more competitive in the second set. The teams battled through an early stretch that included ties at 7-7 and 8-8 before Mercer began to pull away. The Bears cut the deficit to four points at 18-14, but the Mustangs finished the set with a 25-16 win.

Mercer again took control early in the third set, although Union City stayed within striking distance during the opening points. The Bears battled through several extended rallies before Mercer gradually built its advantage and went on to win the set, 25-11, completing the sweep.

Kimberly Zielinski recorded six digs and six assists for Union City. Alivia Zielinski had six digs, while Danica Williamson and Leeah Williamson each finished with six digs.

The loss leaves Union City at 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Region 2 play. Mercer improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Union City will return home Tuesday to face Maplewood before traveling to West Middlesex next Thursday.
