UNION CITY — One of Union City’s signature summer traditions is reaching a milestone this year as the French Creek Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with two days of family activities, entertainment and patriotic celebration on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11.
Hosted by UC Action, the free festival will once again take place on the Union City School Grounds at 105 Concord St. This year’s event also coincides with America’s 250th birthday celebration, giving the community an opportunity to celebrate both local traditions and the nation’s history.
Festival President Morgan Kelly said the anniversary makes this year’s event especially meaningful.
“The French Creek Festival has spent the last 20 years bringing our community together,” Kelly said. “Celebrating this milestone during America’s 250th birthday makes this year’s event even more meaningful. It’s a chance to honor our country’s history while celebrating the traditions, volunteers, businesses and families who have made this festival a success for two decades.”
Activities begin Friday with a football tournament from 1 to 6 p.m., followed by miniature golf and chainsaw carving demonstrations from 5 to 9 p.m. The annual French Creek Pageant begins at 6:30 p.m., with the first day of festivities concluding at 9 p.m.
The celebration expands on Saturday with a full day of events beginning with the annual parade at 11 a.m. Chainsaw carving demonstrations continue from noon to 4 p.m., while miniature golf will be open from noon until 5 p.m. A car show runs from 1 to 5 p.m., followed by pony rides and a petting zoo from 3 to 7 p.m.
The evening schedule includes registration for the chainsaw carving auction beginning at 5 p.m., with the auction starting at 6 p.m. A knockout contest is planned from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by a Dance Glow Party at 8:30 p.m. The festival concludes with a fireworks display at 10 p.m.
Kelly said the festival continues to thrive because of the volunteers, sponsors and community members who support it each year.
“Our goal has always been to create an event where families can come together, make memories and celebrate what makes Union City such a special place,” Kelly said. “Whether you’ve attended every festival or this is your first visit, we hope everyone comes out and enjoys everything the weekend has to offer.”
Parade entries are still being accepted through 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11. Local businesses, organizations, civic groups, clubs and individuals are encouraged to participate.
Admission to the French Creek Festival is free both days. Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy food vendors, community exhibits, family activities and entertainment as Union City marks the festival’s 20th anniversary while joining communities across the country in celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday.
