The appointment was approved during the school board’s May meeting on Thursday.

Gartrell brings both collegiate playing experience and a successful coaching background to the position. He played basketball at PennWest Edinboro, where he was a four-year starter. According to the district, he ranks third in career three-point field goals made and fifth in games played at the school. He was also recognized as a scholar athlete during his college career.

Most recently, Gartrell served as head coach at Erie First Christian Academy. During his tenure, the team recorded the best record in school history, won two District 10 championships, captured a region title, and made two appearances in the PIAA tournament.

The district also credited Gartrell with helping develop several 1,000-point scorers, including Erie County’s all-time leading scorer.

School officials said they look forward to Gartrell leading and developing the Bears basketball program both on and off the court.
