The Union City Lady Bears softball team was back in action on Monday afternoon as they traveled to Slippery Rock University to take on the Sharpsville Lady Blue Devils in the first round of the District 10 2A Playoffs.
The Lady Bears would get off to a quick start as Alissa Leech would lead-off the game with a double, followed by Alivia Zielinski getting aboard with a single. Grace Chapman would then reach base on a fielders choice to score Leech, as the Bears would take a 1-0 lead.
Sharpsville would come up to the plate in the bottom of the first looking to respond. Lily Palko would reach base on a walk with two outs in the inning. Izzie Candiotti would then double to center field to score Palko from first to even the game at one after one inning of play.
The Lady Devils would add another run in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Haley White would lead-off the inning with a triple and then score on a sacrifice fly to left field by Myleigh McCormick as Sharpsville would take a 2-1 lead into the third.
The Bears looked to be in trouble again in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded and only one out for Sharpsville. Miah Applegarth would then hit a hard line drive to Alivia Zielinski who would make the catch and step on second to end the inning with a double play. The Bears would get out of the third with no runs across to keep the score at 2-1.
Sharpsville would blow the game open in the fourth inning however sending eleven to the plate, scoring seven runs on seven hits, including a two-run home run by Lily Palko as the Devils would take a 9-1 lead through four innings.
The Lady Devils would add two more runs in the fifth inning to seal the game, as they would take down the Bears 11-1 in five innings. The win improves the Lady Devils to 13-7 on the season, while the Lady Bears finish the season at 12-6.
