The Union City Lady Bears were back in action on Thursday night taking on the Cochranton Cardinals in their first region game of the season. The Lady Bears would have a 6-5 lead with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter, the lead would be short lived however, as the Cardinals would go on a 15-0 run to make the score 20-6. The Bears would then go on a 11-3 run to make the game close again going into the half trailing 23-17. The Cardinals would pull away in the second half, outscoring the Bears 23-8 in the third quarter. The Lady Bears had trouble shooting the ball all night, as the Cardinals would drill eight three-pointers in the game, led by Shelby McBryar with four. McBryar also led the Cardinals with a game high 20 points. Cathryn Reynolds led the Bears with 9 points. Turnovers were still an issue for the Lady Bears, something they will have to clean up if they want to be the contender everyone was expecting. The Cardinals would take down the Bears 53-37 to improve to 2-3 (1-0) on the season, while the Lady Bears fall to 1-4 (0-1). The Lady Bears will be back in action Monday night as they travel to Corry to take on the Lady Beavers in a non-region game.

Brooke VanTassel takes a layup.

“Tonight’s loss hurts but we have to bounce back. Right now, we’re missing shots, not rebounding, and not being accountable on defense.” Coach Matt Moon told us following the game. “I’ve got to do a better job preparing the girls. We did some things right tonight, but we’ve got to do those things consistently. It’s still early and we’ll use this week as a wakeup call. Three games next week before we break for Christmas and I’m confident we’ll get better and do what we have to do to right the ship. You’ve got to have a short-term memory in this game and learn from your mistakes. That’s what we’re going to do.”
