Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity says that the Pennsylvania Treasury Department returned a record $334.1 million in unclaimed property to individuals and businesses in 2025.
Unclaimed property can include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, abandoned stocks, insurance payments, and other financial assets. Treasury officials emphasized that property remains available for the rightful owner to claim at any time. In cases involving tangible property — such as the contents of safe deposit boxes — items may be auctioned after three years, but the proceeds from those sales remain available to claim in perpetuity.
Treasury officials credited part of the record total to legislation passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly allowing the department to automatically return unclaimed property valued at up to $500. During the program’s first year, nearly $50 million was returned through the automatic claims process.
Residents can search for unclaimed property and file claims through the Pennsylvania Treasury’s website.
