COLUMBUS — Three people, including two teenagers, were seriously injured in a house fire Sunday afternoon in Columbus. All three were reported to be receiving air transport to burn units in Pittsburgh or Akron.
The fire was reported around 2 p.m. at a home on West Main Street. According to reports from the scene, the victims were identified as a 45-year-old man, and two teens, a boy and a girl. All three suffered severe injuries.
Corry’s Director of Public Safety, Andrew Sproveri, told UC Today at the site that the two teenagers were trapped inside the home when firefighters arrived.
“There were two teenagers trapped, a boy and a girl. And they were rescued and taken to the hospital,” Sproveri said. Their conditions were unknown at the time of the interview. Sproveri also said he believed the father was injured while trying to rescue the children.
Sproveri said the home had numerous concealed spaces that made it difficult to reach all areas of the fire. The fire caused extensive damage to the two-story home.
Firefighters from several area departments responded, including Elgin-Beaverdam, Corry Regional, Union City, Wrightsville, Clymer and Spartanburg. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. According to Sproveri, a Pennsylvania State Police fire investigator was expected to examine the scene to help determine the cause.
The fire was declared under control around 4 p.m., although crews were still working on hot spots.
