HARRISBURG — National Fire Prevention Week begins Sunday, Oct. 4, with this year’s focus on safe charging practices and reducing the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

The theme for this year’s campaign is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower.”

The campaign encourages people to take simple precautions when charging phones, computers, power tools, e-bikes, scooters and other battery-powered devices.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends using the cord and charger that came with a device or one approved by the manufacturer. Devices should be charged on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk or bare floor.

People should stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, begins to swell, develops an unusual odor, leaks, smokes or makes popping or hissing sounds.

The campaign also recommends unplugging devices once they are fully charged.

Larger battery-powered items, including e-bikes, scooters and power tools, should be charged outside when possible. Charging equipment should never block exits or other paths used to leave a building.

Air travelers also are reminded to keep devices within sight while they are charging on an airplane. E-cigarettes and vapes should not be charged while on a plane.

Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 4-10 and is intended to promote fire safety practices that can help protect homes and communities.
