HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will stock approximately 114,700 hatchery-raised trout in 117 stream sections and lakes across the state beginning Oct. 1 and continuing through mid-December.

The fall and winter stockings will include Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout and will replenish popular fishing waters as temperatures cool. Trout stocked during the fall and winter may be fished immediately.

The PFBC plans to stock approximately 86,100 adult trout in 92 waters during October, including 52 lakes and 40 stream sections. Sixteen of those waters are Keystone Select Trout Waters, which are managed under Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only regulations.

Another 25 lakes are scheduled to receive approximately 28,600 trout during November and December.

Brian Niewinski, director of the PFBC Bureau of Hatcheries, said fall provides favorable conditions for anglers.

“Beautiful scenery and some of the most comfortable temperatures of the year are in store for anglers who take advantage of stocked trout opportunities this fall,” Niewinski said.

He noted that cooler water temperatures also bring increased activity from other species, including bass, panfish, catfish and walleye.

The PFBC said stocking schedules can change because of water temperature fluctuations, weather and hatchery logistics. Anglers and stocking volunteers are encouraged to check the schedule regularly for postponements and rescheduled stockings.

Extended Trout Season

Pennsylvania’s Extended Trout Season began Sept. 8 and continues through Feb. 14, 2027.

During the extended season, the daily creel limit is three trout of combined species. The minimum size is 7 inches through Dec. 31 and increases to 9 inches beginning Jan. 1, unless special regulations apply.

The extended season regulations apply only to designated Stocked Trout Waters. Trout may not be harvested from other waters during the extended season.

Cold-Weather Boating Reminder

The PFBC is also reminding anglers who fish from boats during the colder months that water temperatures can drop rapidly.

From Nov. 1 through April 30, anyone aboard a boat less than 16 feet in length, including canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, is required to wear a life jacket.

Children 12 and younger are required to wear a life jacket whenever paddling.

Anglers can find current trout stocking information and additional fishing and boating regulations through the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
