Police identified the driver of the striking vehicle as Tommy L. Wright, 44, of Union City. His passenger, 43-year-old Stephanie M. Bartlett of Union City, was also injured in the crash.

According to investigators, on July 13 around 12:30 p.m., Wright was traveling westbound on Interstate 90 when traffic ahead began to slow. Police said he failed to brake in time and struck the rear of another pickup truck that was slowing because of traffic congestion. The other vehicle was driven by a 61-year-old man from Mesa, Arizona, and was occupied by a 62-year-old passenger from Everett, Washington. Neither occupant of the second vehicle was injured.

The impact sent Wright’s vehicle off the right side of the roadway and into a grassy area, where it came to rest. Wright was transported to UPMC Hamot with suspected minor injuries, while Bartlett was taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

State police cited Wright for driving while his operating privilege was suspended or revoked. Fairview Fire and Rescue, A.F. Dobler Hose, West County Paramedics, and Eagle Auto assisted at the scene.
