Union City Boys Edge Northwestern on Senior Night; Lady Bears Turn in Strong Performances

The Union City Bears delivered a strong performance on their home track April 28, edging Northwestern Wildcats in a tightly contested District 10 Region 5 track meet that also served as Senior Night for the Bears.

Union City recognized seniors Hayleigh Brown, Ava Tomcho, Logan Ahl, Cayden Eastman, Jackson Kibbe, Gavin McQueen, Lucas Myer and Brady Whitmeyer prior to competition, then followed with a narrow 74-69 victory on the boys side. The girls team also turned in a competitive showing before falling 78-64.

The Union City boys were led by a series of standout individual efforts. Senior Jackson Kibbe dominated the field events, sweeping all four of his disciplines with first-place finishes in the high jump, long jump, triple jump and javelin. Teammate Lucas Myer added a win in the pole vault, with Zakkary Tomcho finishing second.

On the track, Tyler Messina captured both hurdle events, winning the 110- and 300-meter races. Joseph Green took first in the 400-meter dash, while Saul Murphy added a second-place finish in the same event and third in the 800. Gavin Ahl also placed second in the 800.

Distance runner Josh Mitcham earned a victory in the 1600-meter run, while Zachary Myer placed third in that event and went on to win the 3200. The 4×800 relay team of Mitcham, Ahl, Zachary Myer and Josiah Shrout also secured a first-place finish.

Additional contributions came from Trysten Kibbe, who placed third in the 200, and Cork Greer, who added third-place finishes in the long jump, high jump and discus.

On the girls side, Union City saw several standout performances despite the team loss. Ciandralei Hunter highlighted the meet with a first-place finish in the pole vault at 8 feet, qualifying for districts. Evalynn Flook followed with a second-place finish.

KayLee Creamer swept both hurdle events, winning the 100- and 300-meter races, while the Lady Bears dominated the 800-meter run with a sweep led by Isabella Zaczyk in first, followed by Karmyn Blystone and Briar Moreland.

The 4×400 relay team of Olivia Ahl, Hunter, Flook and Zaczyk also captured first place. In sprint events, Emma Geer placed second in the 100 and later won the 200, leading a Union City sweep that included Olivia Ahl in second and Hunter in third.

Field events also contributed key points, as Kaliyah Stine won the triple jump and placed third in the long jump, while Ava Tomcho added a third-place finish in the javelin. Allie Anderson turned in a strong distance effort with runner-up finishes in both the 1600 and 3200.

Northwestern also posted several notable performances in the meet. Reese Gonzales and Alex Hough led the Wildcats in the sprints, finishing first and second in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. In the field events, Joel Pettis and Javier Serrano controlled the throws, finishing one-two in both the discus and shot put. Makenzie White paced the Northwestern girls with wins in the discus, shot put and javelin, helping secure the team victory.

In the end, the meet lived up to its billing as a competitive Region 5 matchup, with Union City’s depth and standout individual performances lifting the boys to a narrow win while Northwestern’s balanced effort secured the girls team victory.
