The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is recognizing April as Safe Digging Month, encouraging residents, contractors, and utility companies to take precautions before starting any excavation projects.
With spring bringing an increase in construction and outdoor work, officials are emphasizing the importance of planning ahead and maintaining clear communication to prevent damage to underground utilities. One of the key steps highlighted is contacting 8-1-1 before digging to have underground lines properly marked.
The PUC says safe excavation is a shared responsibility, noting that careful preparation and awareness in the field can help reduce accidents, service disruptions, and potential safety hazards across communities.
