A 66-year-old Erie man died Saturday afternoon following a crash in Harborcreek Township.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred around 3:34 p.m. Saturday on East Lake Road near Parkside Drive.
Police said Jeffrey R. Vanhorn, 66, of Erie, was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu west on East Lake Road when the vehicle was observed by multiple witnesses traveling at a high rate of speed.
Investigators said the vehicle left the roadway and traveled onto the north shoulder, striking a Verizon utility pole. The car then continued west on the shoulder and struck a tree before coming to rest facing east on the north side of the roadway.
Emergency crews from the Fairfield Hose Company responded and removed Vanhorn from the vehicle. He was transported to UPMC Hamot, where he was pronounced dead.
State police reported Vanhorn sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Investigators also noted that a seat belt was used improperly.
The crash remains under investigation.
