The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is reminding drivers that starting Tuesday, September 2, the Bayfront Parkway (Route 4034) will be closed between Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street, including the State Street intersection in Erie.
The closure will be in place before the morning commute, and a detour will be posted using Route 5 (12th Street) and Greengarden Boulevard. Access to waterfront hotels, restaurants, and facilities will remain available via Sassafras Street Extension, West Front Street Extension, Holland Street, and East Front Street.
To prepare for the closure, PennDOT has installed safety measures along West and East Front Streets, including speed humps, high-visibility crosswalks, temporary traffic signals, and new pedestrian beacons. Signal timings will be monitored and adjusted as needed. Drivers should also be alert for flaggers on Tuesday morning.
The parkway is expected to remain closed for about one year. During that time, major work on the Central Bayfront Parkway Project will be completed, including the reconstruction of State Street and the parkway to create a grade-separated intersection, shorter crosswalks, new signals, and preparations for a Holland Street roundabout and pedestrian bridge.
