Union Township officials will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, to consider two applications for special exceptions that would allow the development of solar energy systems on a 50-acre property along Old Wattsburg Road.
The applications were submitted by Sunrise Old Wattsburg Road, LLC and Sunrise Rockwood Solar, LLC, each seeking approval to construct a Principal Solar Energy System within the R-1 Rural Residential District at 15850 Old Wattsburg Road. The property is owned by Gregory Rockwood, Jr. and is currently vacant. The site is posted and visible for those who wish to view it in person.
According to Union Township Zoning Officer Beverly Ballog, the 50-acre parcel is divided into two 20-acre sections for the purpose of the proposed solar projects. The remaining acreage is not currently part of the project scope. Both applications require special exception approval due to zoning restrictions in the R-1 district.
The public hearing will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Union Township Building, located at 16450 Route 8, Union City, PA 16438. All residents and interested parties are encouraged to attend and may offer input during the hearing.
