Water bills are going up in Union City. The Municipal Authority has approved a rate increase of $4 per month starting with the January customer bill. A public notice from the authority states the increase equates to an 7.4% uptick for the average water and sewer residential customer and an 11.5% increase for commercial and industrial customers, which is down from last year’s increase of 8% and 13% respectfully. This increase is the fifth since 2019.

The notice states the recent increases have been necessary to replenish the Authority’s reserve funds. The Authority replaced a 35 year-old sewage plant aeration blower last year and new six inch waterlines on Brown street and Fourth Avenue along with other necessary equipment repairs. More proposed future upgrades in the works.
