The Pennsylvania State Police in Corry are investigating a reported forgery and counterfeiting incident in Sparta Township, Crawford County.
According to a police report, troopers responded to Whitney Road on March 17 at approximately 4:12 p.m. for a report of fraud. Investigators say a 54-year-old woman mailed a check for $4,389.67 to pay a bill, but the check was later intercepted by an unknown suspect.
Police report the suspect “water washed” the check, a process used to remove ink, and altered the “Pay to the Order of” line before depositing it.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police in Corry.
