Sailors Sink Bears Playoff Hopes

Written by Cody Rose

The Union City Lady Bears (12-10), traveled to Farrell High School to take on the Lakeview Sailors (16-6), in a District 10 Class 2A Playoff Quarterfinal game, in what was the team’s first playoff appearance in over twenty years, and the fourth in school history. Both teams entered the game hot as the Lady Bears had won six of their last eight, while the Lady Sailors eight of their last ten, including three straight. The Lady Bears got down early with some costly unforced turnovers, allowing the Sailors to quickly pull away from the Bears, and go on to win the game 50-21, as the Sailors win their fourth straight, and improve to 17-6 on the season. The Lady Bears will finish the season at 12-11, ending a great season for the team.

Senior, Jessica Messenger, brings the ball down the court in what would be her last game for Union City

The Lady Bears have a promising future, as they have a young up and coming team of underclassmen ready to play, and the Bears will come back even stronger next season. The Sailors will now move on to take on top seed Kennedy Catholic (19-4), Wednesday, March 1 in the Semi-finals. “Definitely not the way we wanted to end things this year, but I couldn’t be prouder of this group and all they’ve accomplished.” Coach Matt Moon told us in a statement after the game. “Credit to Lakeview, they played really well and put a lot of pressure on us defensively. We just never settled in and couldn’t get anything going. We’ll take a lot away from the experience though and will be back and better next year. Always sad when it’s over but our program is on the rise, and we have a solid group returning and will work all summer to make sure we get the first playoff win in school history next season. Go Bears!”
