Written by Cody Rose

The Union City Lady Bears Basketball team comes into the 2022 season under third year Head Coach Matt Moon who has been in the midst of rebuilding the team and trying to turn it into a winning program. Coach Moon told us the team is excited about the upcoming season and talked about how the practices have been going, “We’re very excited about this season. Our open gyms and practices have been extremely competitive which is great.” The Bears came up just short of making the playoffs last season ending the year with an 8-8 (5-5 region 2) record, and now are looking to take that next step which is making the playoffs and maybe even competing for the region title. The Bears lost a handful of seniors due to graduation, Julia Murphy, Kamryn Gates-Bowersox, Zoe Magee, Sophia Messenger and Abby Tingley, but are coming back with a list of talented young ladies such as, Jessica Messenger, Cathryn Reynolds, Michayla Magee, Lucy Higley and Angie Hopson to name a few. The JV team will be fun to watch this year, as moving up and joining the team will be the Junior High Girls Basketball Championship team from last year when they went undefeated En-route to the FCVAA Championship. Coach Moon spoke with us about the young talent the team has this season saying that they are pushing the veteran players to become better, “We’ve got a lot of young talent and it’s really pushing our veterans to bring out the best in everyone. It’s going to be fun to watch these girls compete.” The Lady Bears will begin the season December 2-3 in the Meadville tip-off tournament while their home opener will take place December 6 vs Seneca. .
